The Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) offers an annual scholarship for library school students and new professionals to attend ALA's Annual Conference. The goal of the Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship is to advance two principles that Gordon held dear: intellectual freedom and mentoring.

Judith Krug Fund Education Project Scholarships

The Judith F. Krug Memorial Fund funds online education efforts focused on intellectual freedom for library and information studies (LIS) students and library professionals. Judith was a fierce proponent of education, and among her many other accomplishments she taught classes and lectured frequently at LIS programs on intellectual freedom.

Legal & Financial Assistance

Through the provision of financial and legal assistance to libraries and librarians, the Foundation attempts to eliminate the difficult choice between practical expediency and principle in the selection and distribution of library materials. Persons committed to defending the freedom to read should be given an assurance that their commitment will not result in legal convictions, financial loss or personal damage.

Grants

Judith Krug Banned Books Week Event Grants

Each year the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) distributes grants to organizations to support activities that raise awareness of intellectual freedom and censorship issues during the annual Banned Books Weeks celebration. With these grants, staff at all types of libraries, schools, universities, and non-profit community organizations receive a grant for $1,000 for programming during Banned Books Week.

Roll of Honor

The Freedom to Read Foundation Roll of Honor was established in 1987 to recognize and honor those individuals who have contributed substantially to the FTRF through adherence to its principles and/or substantial monetary support.

Robert P. Holley Fund

In 2017 retired library science educator Robert Holley, along with Martha Spear, his spouse, established a new FTRF endowment called the Robert P. Holley Fund.

The fund was established to support two purposes:

a. To encourage membership in the FTRF by library students.
b. To support FTRF’s litigation efforts on behalf of free speech and privacy.
