Conable Conference Scholarship applications open

Posted By Jonathan M. Kelley, Thursday, February 13, 2014

Attention all LIS students and recent grads (within the last 3 years): FTRF again this year is offering free attendance at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference, via our Gordon M. Conable Fund.  We're looking for someone with a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to intellectual freedom issues. Is that you? Find out more here!

Applications are open through April 11.

Please note that the Conable Conference Scholarship is made possible thanks to donations from FTRF members and other supporters. If you would like to help make a library school student or new librarian's conference dream come true, please consider tossing a couple of bucks into the Conable Fund!

Amanda Meeks wins 2013 Conable Conference Scholarship

Posted By Jonathan M. Kelley, Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Amanda Meeks of Chicago was named the recipient of the 2013 Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship. Check out our press release about her, and meet and congratulate her in person next month at the FTRF Member Reception at the Hilton Chicago. (You can also meet Sara Paretsky!) There's no charge to attend the reception.

Since graduating last year from Emporia State, Amanda has become involved in the volunteer-run Read/Write Library (formerly the Chicago Underground Library), which collects Chicago-area books, magazines, zines, journals, newspapers, broadsides, and art books. She'll be talking about that and other projects at her "ignite" session on Monday, July 1, 11:30 a.m.–noon at McCormick Place.

Congrats, Amanda!

Conable Scholar Barbakoff an LJ Mover, Shaker

Posted By Jonathan M. Kelley, Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Audrey Barbakoff, 2011 recipient of FTRF's Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship, was named last week one of Library Journal's "Movers and Shakers" for 2013.  Under the category "Change Agents," the magazine made specific mention of the "Radical Home Economics" program she has implemented at Bainbridge Island Library and the "Ferry Tales" book club for Puget Sound commuters.

Last year, Barbakoff was named an ALA Emerging Leader, one of two sponsored by the Public Library Association.

Applications for the 2013 Conable Conference Scholarship are open through April 5.  As Audrey said in her report to the FTRF Board:

[The Conable Scholarship] was an incredible opportunity for me not only to attend my first ALA annual conference, but also to experience ALA in a different and deeper way than I would have on my own.

Congratulations, Audrey, and keep up the great work!
