IFLA Secretary General Resigns after Eight MonthsThe International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions announced December 8 that IFLA Secretary General Ramachandran Rasu had resigned after just eight months on the job. The announcement said only that he was leaving “for personal reasons effective December 31.”The IFLA executive committee has named Sjoerd Koopman, coordinator of professional activities at IFLA headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, as acting secretary general. Koopman told American Libraries that Rasu was not immediately available for comment and had already returned to Singapore, where he was director of the National Library before joining the IFLA staff. Koopman said the resignation “came as a great surprise” but that he was not at liberty to divulge details. IFLA President Kay Raseroka of Botswana noted on the IFLA website that “Mr. Ramachandran brought new perspectives to IFLA which have enhanced the planning process.” The executive committee is looking at how the federation will seek a permanent replacement, said Koopman.
