First Lady Presents IMLS AwardsFirst Lady Laura Bush presented the 2006 National Awards for Museum and Library Service to three libraries and three museums in a ceremony at the White House January 8.Given by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the $10,000 awards recognize institutions that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to public service through innovative programs and community partnerships. The library winners were Frankfort (Ind.) Community Public Library, Public Library of Charlotte (N.C.) and Mecklenburg County, and San Antonio Public Library. The Frankfort Community Public Library was cited for its free and low-cost fine-art, crafts, music, theatre, cooking, and gardening classes for children and adults. PLCMC’s ImaginOn Center was recognized for its “approach to service and programming that can transform lives,” while San Antonio drew praise for its outreach to “hard-to-reach, low-income, Spanish-speaking population.” Museum winners were Artrain USA of Ann Arbor, Michigan; the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago; and the Lincoln (Nebr.) Children’s Zoo. “Whether it’s a train conductor hauling art masterpieces across the United States,” Mrs. Bush commented, “the zookeeper introducing children to a red-foot tortoise, or that friendly librarian asking ‘May I help you?’the people behind each of today’s winning institutions have made their organizations indispensable to the communities they serve.” Posted January 12, 2007. |
