Virginia Young Dies at 86

Virginia Young, 86, who earned honorary membership in the American Library Association in 1985 for her lifetime of library service, died March 16.

Young was a trustee of the Columbia (Mo.) Library District (now part of the Daniel Boone Regional Library System) from 1952 until 2002. In that capacity, she played a major role in the Columbia Public Library’s 1971 construction and its 2002 expansion. Upon the library’s reopening in 2002, its boardroom was named in her honor. Young also served on the board of the Missouri State Library and as a member of the Friends of the University of Missouri Library and the Missouri Historical Society. She earned an MLS at the University of Oklahoma in 1940.

Her work went beyond the state’s borders, however. Young edited The Library Trustee: A Practical Guidebook, first published in 1964 and now in its fifth edition. She frequently spoke at library meetings nationally and internationally and was a delegate to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. From 1959 to 1961, she served as president of ALA’s Association for Library Trustees and Advocates.
