County Intervenes to Hire New Knoxville DirectorAfter the Knox County (Tenn.) Public Library System board refused to confirm the search committee’s choice for a new director, County Executive Mike Ragsdale announced he would be “stepping in” to hire the nominee. After interviews in late May, the search committee selected Larry J. Frank, director of the Hinsdale (Ill.) Public Library, to fill the post vacated when Patricia Wasson retired in September 2002.The board was supposed to ratify or reject the selection at a contentious May 27 meeting, but four of the six members present abstained, leaving only two votes for Frank, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported May 28. Because of state legislation passed April 14 that allows the transfer of county library governance from independent boards to county government, Ragsdale has been granted direct authority over the library system. However, the date his authority kicks in remained unclear at the end of May. “It’s my intention to honor the search committee’s finding and go ahead and hire a director,” Ragsdale said. “We’re going to go forward and have an absolutely outstanding library system.” Posted June 3, 2003. |
