Hawaii Legislature Approves Funds to Open Kapolei Branch

Hawaii state legislators have agreed to provide $1 million effective July 1 for the Kapolei branch library—which has sat empty since its completion last spring—plus an additional $1.6 million for FY 2004–2005.

“We’re very encouraged and very grateful for this good news,” said Acting State Librarian Jo Ann Schindler in the April 23 Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

State budget conferees approved 19 full-time staff positions effective July 1, 2004. Although the system has nearly 70 vacancies and is operating under a hiring freeze, Sen. Brian Kanno (D-Kapolei) said he still hopes the branch can open by the end of this year, perhaps with the help of staff from other libraries or temporary hires.

“It may not be the full-blown library with all the bells and whistles, but a limited opening,” he said in the April 23 Honolulu Advertiser. “But it would be much better than what’s available now, which is a volunteer reading room,” he noted, referring to the volunteer-run room that opened in March with donated materials.
