Canadian Library Association
Gets New Executive Director

The Canadian Library Association has appointed Don Butcher as its new executive director, effective October 21. The post has been vacant since the March 20 resignation of Vicki Whitmell.

CLA President Wendy Newman said the association’s executive council was pleased with Butcher’s “strength in communication and his breadth of experience and education in not-for-profit management.”

Butcher has worked in not-for-profit associations for the past 16 years, most recently as executive director of the Ontario Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada, an organization serving real estate appraisers. Prior to that he was manager of membership and professional development for the Canadian Society of Association Executives. His first career was as a journalist with community newspapers in Ontario.

“It probably comes as no surprise that as a former journalist I have strong feelings on the importance of easy access to information in a democratic society,” Butcher said. “Libraries and library workers play an essential role in this, as well as in Canada’s cultural, academic, and economic life.”
