Ann Arbor Approves Union ContractThe Ann Arbor (Mich.) District Library Board signed a three-year contract with the 19-member Librarians Association October 21, ending negotiations that began in 1996 when the library became independent of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. The contract provides for the adoption of a merit-based pay system and more flexibility for the library in staffing public-service desks, as well as health care, vacation, and sick leave to match that of nonunion coworkers. One sticking point in negotiations had been Sunday hours, which were previously covered by hourly substitute librarians, the Ann Arbor News reported October 23. The board said Sundays should be part of the librarians’ regular work week, while the union wanted overtime pay to work Sundays. Librarians Association President Sherry Roberts said that although she wasn’t happy librarians would now work Sundays with no extra pay, “It had been six years, and we felt at an impasse. . . . So we voted for it in the hopes that maybe in three years we can work to change it.” In June the library settled a three-year contract with the Staff Associates Union, which represents clerks, bookmobile drivers, and other support staff.
