First Lady Plans School Library Meeting
for Principals, Superintendents
As part of an ongoing effort to make libraries and education her focus as First Lady, Laura Bush plans to gather 175 principals, superintendents, and other school administrators for a meeting at the White House June 4 to talk about the value of school libraries.
The half-day gathering will feature talks by Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian; Susan Neuman, assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education in the U.S. Department of Education; and Keith Curry Lance, director of library research service at the State Library and Adult Education Office of the Colorado Department of Education. Lance will present empirical evidence for the impact of good school libraries on student achievement.
Mrs. Bush wants to get the attention of education administrators, Institute of Museum and Library Services Director Robert Martin told American Libraries, and show them the kind of outcomes that are possible when librarians and teachers work together. IMLS is cooperating with the First Lady and the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries in planning the invitational meeting.
