Report Faults LC’s Lack of
Safety Preparedness
A report issued November 25 by the Congressional Office of Compliance found “significant safety and health hazards” at the Capitol and related office buildings. The agency noted that the Library of Congress police failed to evacuate the library’s main building during a fire in April and that workers had complained that fire alarms are inaudible in places throughout the complex, according to the November 26 Washington Post.
LC was also criticized for its lack of preparedness and singled out for not having an emergency action plan, the New York Times reported November 26. The library said one was in development, which it expected would be finished by February.
The biennial report to Congress said that although some health and safety improvements have been made since the September 11 attacks, the buildings in the Capitol complex still have deficiencies that pose a threat to staff, lawmakers, and the public, the Post said.
