Former Librarian Given Death Sentence

Five years after murdering his ex-girlfriend in Fort Lauderdale, former Broward County (Fla.) Library Supervisor William Coday was sentenced to death July 26 by Circuit Court Judge Alfred Horowitz. The court ruled that the “brutality and torture” inflicted on victim Gloria Gomez outweighed such mitigating factors as his lonely childhood or psychiatric problems, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported July 27.

Coday was convicted of first-degree murder April 10, after confessing to killing Gomez in a “demonic rage.” His attorneys are planning an appeal to the Florida Supreme Court, based on a June U.S. Supreme Court decision, Ring v. Arizona, that said only juries, not judges, could assign a death penalty. However, the jury at Coday’s trial had also recommended death, by a 9–3 vote.
