LC Selects Partner in
Veterans History Project

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced November 8 that AARP has agreed to become the founding sponsor of a program designed to collect first-person accounts from those who defended the country during wartime. The Veterans History Project, signed into law October 27, 2000, by President Clinton, will be administered by LC through its American Folklife Center. The library will collect and preserve oral histories and documentary materials from veterans on World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and the Gulf War, as well as stories from the homefront.

The AARP (formerly called the American Association of Retired Persons) plans to find among its 35 million members veterans whose stories have not been recorded. “We also will create a well-trained volunteer force to conduct proper oral history interviews with their parents, friends, and even strangers,” AARP President Tess Canja said, adding that the organization would assist in the development of public programs to encourage veteran reminiscences.

Billington also announced the names of more than 100 other partner organizations that will be participating at state and national levels. A Five-Star Council consisting of veterans, elected officials, historians, and journalists will provide leadership and advice.
