The End of Civilization?Civilization, the bimonthly “Magazine of the Library of Congress,” will suspend publication following its October-November issue. Advertising Age reported September 27 that a spokesperson for Worth Media, which published the title under a licensing agreement with LC, said the magazine had severed ties with the library and that some of its assets were for sale. The spokesperson said Worth Media retains the trademark to the brand and plans to develop it “online, in print and on TV.” The Washington Post reported September 26 that Publisher Randy Jones e-mailed his staff to say he is “very committed to further development of this brand, albeit in reinvented form.” The magazine, launched in 1994 as the Library of Congress’s version of the Smithsonian Institution’s Smithsonian, won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1996. It was sold to Worth Media in 1997. According to Advertising Age, this year’s ad pages were down 9.6% from 1999. Posted October 2, 2000. |
