University Librarian Gets Probation
for Misusing Library Funds

An acquisitions librarian who expanded her home library with books and other items that she purchased for Buley Library at Southern Connecticut State University was put on two-year probation May 16 by a Superior Court judge.

Prosecutors charged that from 1996 to 1999, Denise Botto of New Haven, Connecticut, used her position to buy $8,801 worth of books and merchandise for her own personal use, the Associated Press reported May 16. A query from the state Office of the Auditor of Public Accounts resulted in an investigation by authorities; in February Botto was arrested and charged with misuse of public funds. She could have been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Botto has resigned her post, given up any right to emerita status, and made full restitution. After she successfully completes probation and 200 hours of community service, the charges against her will be dropped from her criminal record.
