Ann Arbor Board Sues Accountants,
Supports Director
The Ann Arbor (Mich.) District Library filed a lawsuit June 28 against Plante and Moran, the accounting firm that it claims was responsible for a $1-million deficit confirmed this year. The firm’s former employee, Don Dely, who later became the library’s finance director, was arrested June 19 after a three-month police investigation on three felony counts of embezzlement as a public official. He was released on personal recognizance pending a July 17 preliminary hearing.
Library Board President Richard Dougherty said Plante and Moran “failed to live up to the terms of their agreement by putting into our midst someone not up to the demand,” the Ann Arbor News reported June 29.
In a related matter, the board voted June 22 to renew its contract with Director Mary Anne Hodel for another year, despite accusations that she waited too long before informing police of her suspicions about Dely. Board member Ed Surovell told reporters, “She runs a good library. The vote was unanimous.”
