Woman Raped After Hours
at Salt Lake City Branch

As her baby cried in another room, a woman was raped then tied up along with her aunt by a man who broke into the Day-Riverside branch of the Salt Lake City (Utah) Public Library early December 28.

The victim had driven to the library to pick up her aunt, who is the night custodian there. The aunt unwillingly let the assailant in when she opened a door after hearing someone knock. He then forced the niece, who was carrying her baby in a car seat, into the library, police said in the December 29 Salt Lake Tribune.

The man then took money, a key to the library, and a computer, then fled in the niece’s car. Police found the car two hours later partially submerged in the Jordan River.

Library officials promised to take immediate steps to protect employees and had new locks and a dead bolt added to doors at Day-Riverside by that afternoon.
