Tornado Rips Roof at Kentucky CollegeA tornado that damaged 750 homes, toppled trees, and smashed cars in Owensboro, Kentucky, January 3 tore off half the roof of the building that houses the library at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Preliminary estimates show nearly $5 million in damage to the 12 buildings on the 70-acre campus. The most seriously hit was the president’s home, where the entire roof either blew off or collapsed onto the second floor, President Wesley H. Poling told the January 5 Cincinnati Enquirer. Also heavily damaged were two dormitories that house about half of the college’s 800 students. The students were still on holiday break, which has been extended indefinitely. School officials are waiting to determine an opening date for spring semester until they know when electricity will be restored to the campus. Posted January 10, 2000. |
