750 Libraries Celebrate
Teen Read Week

This year’s second annual Teen Read Week, held October 18-22, was a success “beyond our wildest dreams,” said Julie Walker, director of ALA’s Young Adult Library Services Association, which sponsored the event.

Walker said that 750 libraries, both school and public, registered to participate. The event garnered coverage in a number of national publications, including USA Weekend, Seventeen, Teen People, and Jump.

Librarians are sharing what they did in their libraries and schools by e-mailing the feedback form to ALA along with photos and anecdotes. Some of the highlights included staging an alien encounter at Clearwater (Fla.) Public Library System and posing for homemade “Read” posters featuring teens reading their favorite books at the Mount Airy branch of the Carroll County (Md.) Public Library.

November 1 is the final day for receiving feedback forms and photos. Highlights will be featured on a photo page scheduled for the December issue of American Libraries.
