University of Michigan Alums
Leave the Library $1.1 Million
The University of Michigan/Ann Arbor Library has announced the creation of the Raymund and Elizabeth Cassidy Endowed Book Fund with the $1.1-million bequest from the estate of 1924 alumnus Raymund Cassidy and his wife Elizabeth, who were known for their support of public education. Officials say it is the largest gift the library has ever received from an individual.
The endowment has been earmarked for “collection development supporting research and teaching beyond the regularly budgeted acquisitions” according to an April 26 university statement. Library Director William A.Gosling anticipates using the endowment income to acquire and preserve monographs, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, and to digitize portions of the library’s current collection.
Gosling praised the Cassidys’ gesture as “a public acknowledgment of the value of the library to the mission of this institution.”
