California Readies the Ultimate Multitype

Library leaders in California are implementing the launch of the long-sought Library of California, an ILL network comprised of every academic, public, school, and special library in the state. Created by legislation that went into effect January 1, the Library of California will enable residents statewide to tap into some 8,000 collections, as needed, when their local library cannot satisfactorily answer an information request. “It's, in a nutshell, the linking of all public and private libraries,” California State Librarian Kevin Starr told the February 21 Sacramento Bee.

Funded with an initial $5 million appropriation, the new network is expected to cost the state up to $100 million annually when fully operational since it will reimburse individual libraries for their ILL costs as well as supporting collection-preservation projects. Although the Library of California Act allows lending libraries the latitude of declining to send a rare item to an off-site patron, it also requires that they provide a photocopy or digitized version of the requested material instead.
