ALA President Holds Discussions with Filtering Software Manufacturers

American Library Association President Ann Symons hosted an all-day meeting with representatives of a dozen manufacturers of filtering software at ALA Headquarters in Chicago March 12, “to provide a forum for discussion of ALA’s concerns about the use of filters in libraries and future developments in Web management technology.”

A half-dozen ALA member-leaders also spoke, including Intellectual Freedom Chair Steven Herb, who described how improved products could help librarians fulfill their commitment to intellectual freedom on the Internet. Herb asserted that librarians would be interested in software that allows patrons to customize their searching with full knowledge of what is being blocked and without restricting access for others.

The meeting was the clearest indication to date that Association leaders think some forms of filtering children’s Internet access can be implemented without sacrificing the principles adopted by ALA Council in 1996, supporting “access to information on all subjects that serve the needs or interests of each user, regardless of the user’s age or the content of the material.”
