IMLS Study Says Library-Museum
Partnerships Rare but Rewarding

A new study by the Institute of Museum and Library Services reveals that “museums and libraries typically do not consider each other as partners, but when they do partner they report a very positive experience.” Announced June 25 the study results indicate that such partnerships increase community access to information, enhance education, attract new audiences, and expand the reach of programs.

Details of the study are scheduled for release at ALA’s Annual Conference in New Orleans, June 25–30, and are expected to show that while libraries indicate availability of outside funding is a key criterion when considering a new partnership, few are aware of IMLS funding that supports library-museum partnerships.

Created in 1996, IMLS is an independent federal grant-making agency established to strengthen museums and libraries. Its National Leadership Grant guidelines for FY 2000 will be available this fall, with an application deadline of April 1.
