Storm Floods Downtown Muncie LibraryClogged drains on the roof caused water to leak into the Carnegie Library in downtown Muncie, Indiana, during a heavy thunderstorm July 26, soaking furnishings, knocking out electricity, and snapping an ornamental tree in half. Most of the water damage was to offices, furniture, and floor coverings, rather than to books and equipment, Carnegie supervisor Mary Lou Gentis told the July 27 Muncie Star-Press. “We were very lucky, collection-wise,” she said, although she was concerned about mold and mildew damage. Gentis said the water burst into the 95-year-old building through a trap door in the attic, creating waterfalls and streams inside the library. “We’ve had our share of leaky roofs but never anything like this since I’ve been here,” she said. The building reopened to the public July 30, although the main floor was to remain closed until new flooring could be installed. Posted August 9, 1999. |
