Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky Appointed to Unprecedented Third TermLibrarian of Congress James H. Billington announced April 5 that Robert Pinsky has been appointed to an unprecedented third term as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress In addition, Billington named three special consultants to assist with the poetry programs of LC’s bicentennial in 2000: former poet laureate Rita Dove, Louise Gluck, and W. S. Merwin. “We want to create a once-in-a-century arrangement, not only to celebrate poetry during our 200th birthday, but also to significantly increase support for national outreach of the poetry office and the poet laureate,” Billington said. Pinsky's Favorite Poem project has for the past two years involved him in collecting audio and video recordings of Americans from all parts of the country reading or reciting their favorite poems aloud, for deposit into the library's collection next year. The appointments take effect in October. The special consultants will be compensated with privately raised bicentennial funds. Posted April 12, 1999. |
