Stalemate Stalls Longer LAPL HoursAlthough the city council approved extended hours in 1997 for Los Angeles Public Library branch and regional libraries, getting those facilities staffed on Sundays now faces a roadblock. After nine months of negotiations, the city and the Librarians Guild Local 2626 agreed to provide full-time LAPL staff with eight hours of pay for five hours of work on Sunday. Last week, however, union members' vote on the measure was almost evenly split and failed to reach the needed two-thirds approval. Librarians Guild President Rory Stone told the Los Angeles Times May 22 the rejection is prompted less by pay issues than by insufficient staff, voicing librarians' fear that the administration would not hold to its promise that employees would only have to work one Sunday per month. The library administration intends to bring the issue to the city Employee Relations Board, which is expected to bring in a mediator. Posted May 25, 1998. |
