Library's Listing as Sex Site Spurs Predator Bill

The discovery by Michigan State Senator George Hart (D-Dearborn) that the men's restroom of his district's main library is listed on a Web site as a good place for men to meet for sex has prompted him to introduce a bill hiking criminal sentences for people convicted of preying on minors online.

Admitting that the Internet has "information that can benefit education," Hart told the Detroit News May 18 that the medium is also "being abused by immoral perpetrators who are reaching out to young people." In turn, Dearborn library system director Pat Coady said he hoped Internet users would soon spread the word that predators who seek sexual encounters at the Henry Ford Centennial Library "can be arrested there."

The Senate was expected to vote on Senate Bill 785 by the end of May.
