Wayne County Employees Seek to UnionizeEmployees of the Wayne County (Ohio) Public Library have been gathering signatures from the 102-member staff since March for a vote on union representation with Service Employees International Union District 925. Staff members waited to go public with their intentions because they didn't want to jeopardize the passage of a 1-mill, 5-year replacement levy for the library, which voters approved on May 5, according to the May 9 Wooster Daily Record. Employees told the paper they want to unionize to ensure they have a voice in library decisions, saying the administration has not recognized or made honest efforts to address ongoing concerns. Library Director Pamela Hickson-Stevenson said the trustees have adopted a strategic plan of more than 45 objectives to step up communications with staff. The board also authorized her in April to review the pay scale and to recommend adjustments if necessary. Posted June 1, 1998. |
