Stolen Volumes Recovered in Greek Bookstore

Some 5,000 books, many of them priceless treasures from the 18th and 19th centuries, turned up in an antiquarian bookstore only 150 yards from the Athens Polytechnic School Library, which had reported them missing. Police raided the bookstore May 21 after a private investigator verified that it was offering the school's property for sale, and the library is now taking inventory of all the seized titles.

The bookstore belongs to Spyros Koufakis, who is also an employee of Athens Polytechnic. The May 28 Athens News reported that school officials date the theft to 1992, when a large number of books were scheduled for transfer to another campus but never arrived.
