Arkansas Library Closes After Ceiling Caves inDecades' worth of pigeon droppings and a heavy rainstorm were more than the ceiling of the Saline County Public Library in Benton, Arkansas, could bear. Staff arrived July 7 to find that the roof, already damaged by heavy rains earlier in the week, had admitted so much water into the attic that portions of the original 1915 ceiling had collapsed onto a more recent lowered ceiling; both had fallen into the children's room, depositing 83 years of soggy, accumulated waste. The library has been closed by health officials, and contractors have estimated that repairs will cost up to $34,000. The library board is scheduled to meet this week to take bids. Damage to materials was minimal, since the ceiling fell over a computer and librarians' desk. Library Director Julie Hart told American Libraries that pigeons had been a recurring problem for directors before her. Each one thought the problem had been solved, whereas it had been merely piling up. Posted July 20, 1998. |
