Sick Library Building Cure Could Cost $840,000

Officials at the Tampa/Hillsborough County (Fla.) Public Library System are mulling their options in light of a consultant's report that says it will cost over $800,000 to cure air-quality problems in the system's Northwest Regional Library.

A leaky roof, inadequate dehumidification, and seepage of humid air into the library have caused high levels of humidity in the 13-year-old building, resulting in contamination in the air-conditioning units and ducts, a persistent musty smell, and the growth of mold on ceiling lighting fixtures.

The report by GST Environmental, Inc., said the library would have to be closed for three months for cleanup, according to a story in the St. Petersburg Times. A second option, the story said, would be to close one half of the library for three months, though this six-month strategy would increase the cost by about 40%.
