Pleasanton, California, May Leave County Library SystemCiting the need for increased hours and an improved collection, the city of Pleasanton, California, is considering taking control of its library and leaving the Alameda County system. City officials estimate it will cost about $2.25 million to run the library. The city now gives the county about $2.3 million for library services, but it has limited control over library hours, the kinds of books that are stocked, and the number of computers needed for Internet access, according to the July 28 San Francisco Chronicle. The city would join other Alameda County cities such as Oakland, Livermore, Alameda, Hayward, and Berkeley, which run their own libraries. Most of them left the county system because of hours and service cutbacks in recent years. If the city council approves the plan at its August 18 meeting, the takeover is scheduled for July 1, 1999.
