Governor's Veto Costs Boston
Public Library $8 Million

The Boston Public Library stands to lose $8 million slated for ongoing restoration of the main library as well as some renovation projects in the branches following Acting Governor Paul Cellucci's last-minute vetoes of $200 million in funding for various statewide projects.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino urged legislators to reconvene and challenge the governor's vetoes, which were announced August 10 after they had finished formal business for the year, according to the August 13 Boston Globe.

Public Relations Officer Art Dunphy told American Libraries that "the feeling is that the decision will be reversed." Dunphy said legislators would have to suspend their rules and return to session, which is not unheard of, especially, he noted, in an election year.
