Embattled E-Rate Head Fishman Resigns

The embattled head of the corporation administering the universal-service telecommunications discount program is leaving the position on August 28.

Kathleen Ouye, chair of the Schools and Libraries Corporation, said that SLC Chief Executive Officer Ira Fishman announced his resignation August 12. Ouye said Fishman cited "family and personal reasons" for his departure. However, he has been under attack from Republican senators critical of the Federal Communication Commission's administration of the program, who singled out Fishman's $200,000 salary.

"I felt pretty good about where we were on the program so it seemed like a good break point,'' Fishman told the Associated Press.

Ouye said Chief Operations Officer Kate Moore, who was assistant secretary of transportation in the Bush administration, would serve as acting CEO. She described Moore, formerly with United Way of America, as "a Republican with strong Republican ties."
