Broward Commissioners Reject Hefty Referendum ProposalBroward County commissioners met August 11 to consider placing a $250-million library bond issue on the November ballot, but rejected the proposal as excessive and lacking in public support. Although most commissioners agreed on the need to upgrade and expand the Broward County Library system, they found the price tag untenable and concluded that other options must be explored. Library Director Sam Morrison told American Libraries that he knew the cost would never fly with the commission and was relieved that the measure would not be on the November ballot because it likely would have failed. He said he hoped a referendum "upwards of $75 million" could be proposed on the March ballot, after options such as partnerships with schools and private developers had been investigated. The referendum proposal was based on a study conducted at the request of the commission by Providence Associates, library planners and consultants headquartered in Texas. Posted August 17, 1998. |
